Naval Academy Istanbul

A Prestigious Turkish Naval and Engineering Institution

The Turkish Naval Academy, known in Turkish as Deniz Harp Okulu, is the Turkish Navy’s principal institution for educating and training future naval officers. Its origins date to 1773, when a naval mathematics school was established at the Golden Horn Naval Shipyard in Istanbul during the reign of Sultan Mustafa III. The academy developed through several historic locations, including Kasımpaşa and Heybeliada, before moving to its modern campus at Tuzburnu, Tuzla, Istanbul.

Today, the academy combines rigorous engineering education with professional naval, leadership, maritime and military training. It operates within the National Defense University and prepares cadets for service in the Turkish Naval Forces. International participation is an established part of academy life: guest cadets from friendly and allied countries have studied at the institution under military training cooperation agreements since the 1993–1994 academic year.

Admission Requirements

International Cadet Admission Through Official Cooperation Channels

International admission to the Naval Academy is not handled as a conventional open university application. Candidates from countries with a Military Training Cooperation Agreement with Türkiye are nominated by their sending country and evaluated through the Turkish Embassy and Turkish Military Attaché Office. Individual applications to the academy are not accepted.

Requirement Area International Applicant Guidance
Academic Qualification Completion of secondary education or an equivalent high-school qualification is required.
Standardized Exams SAT, ACT, IB, GCE A-Levels or national examinations may support an application file, but admission is governed by the bilateral military cooperation agreement rather than a universal score threshold.
Selection Process Candidates are selected by the sending country and assessed through Turkish military authorities under the applicable agreement.
Language Requirement Instruction is in Turkish. Cadets without sufficient Turkish proficiency may complete a one-year Turkish preparatory class before beginning academy studies.
Medical and Military Standards Applicants must satisfy the physical, medical, security and disciplinary standards applicable to military cadet admission.
